Με αυτόν τον τρόπο μειώνονται τα περιττά έξοδα λίπανσης, μειώνοντας το κόστος παραγωγής και τους περιβαλλοντικούς κινδύνους. Επίσης, η ανάλυση του εδάφους παρέχει πληροφορίες για τα είδη των καλλιεργειών που είναι αποδοτικότερες στο συγκεκριμένο τύπο εδάφους.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα, η ανάλυση εδάφους προσδιορίζει το pH (δηλαδή πόσο όξινο ή αλκαλικό είναι), την κοκκομετρική σύσταση (αναλογία άμμου, αργίλου και ιλύς, δηλαδή αν είναι βαρύ ή ελαφρύ έδαφος), την περιεκτικότητα σε οργανική ουσία, που είναι ένδειξη της γονιμότητας του εδάφους, την ηλεκτρική αγωγιμότητα (μέτρηση της αλατότητας του εδάφους) και φυσικά την συγκέντρωση σε βασικά θρεπτικά συστατικά.
